V.C. WON: 20 APR 1900 At Wakkerstroom, South Africa
CITATION: On the evening of the 20th April 1900, during the advance of the infantry to support the mounted troops, Lieut. Nickerson went in the most gallant manner, under a heavy shell and rifle fire, to attend a wounded man, dressed his wounds, and remained with him until he had him conveyed to a place of safety.

The name of William Nickerson resides on these pages because in 1881 he moved with his family from Canada and was living at 17 Shaftsbury Road, Southsea from where he attended Portsmouth Grammar School until 1889 when his family moved to Manchester.
