Cradock was not one of the senior admirals. He commanded a tiny fragment of Britain's naval might. At Coronel he encountered a force of enemy ships with more powerful guns. He could have escaped into the night; he attacked and was defeated.

And yet he has a more prominent, more sumptuous monument than any twentieth-century British admiral bar none.
