SPO Arthur Ernest Smith lost his life aboard HMS Laforey which had been carrying out a submarine sweep with HMS Ulster and HMS Tumult when U-223 was located by asdic. The submarine surfaced after being heavily depth-charged and was attacked by gunfire. Shortly before being sunk U-223 fired a Gnat which hit HMS Laforey which sank about 60 miles north-east of Palermo, Sicily. 189 lives were lost in total including that of the 14th Flotilla Commanding Officer, Capt. H.T. Armstrong.
 
SPO Smith was the son of Walter John and Charlotte Nona Smith, of Eastney, Portsmouth and is named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial (see photo).
